Summer is in full swing in Washington and I'm eager to get back to Ohio for the 4th of July holiday. Congress has been working through appropriations bills and passed 3 more this week. Here's an update:

The House of Representatives voted on three appropriations bill to responsibly fund the government and reign in wasteful spending. We passed:
- The State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act to safeguard global economic interests, support our allies, refocus taxpayer resources, and promote democracy
- The Homeland Security Appropriations Act to secure our southern border and strengthen national security
- The Defense Appropriations Act to refocus the Pentagon on its core mission

Homeland Security

The Homeland Security Act provides $64.81 billion to secure our southern border, remove dangerous criminals, counter China, and bolster our national security. The bill also includes $22.74 billion for major disaster response and recovery.

This bill directly counters President Biden’s border policies by providing $600 million for the construction of the border wall, investing in border security technology, requiring Secretary Mayorkas to adhere to U.S. border laws, and supporting 22,000 Border Patrol agents. This bill also prohibits funding for abortions or gender-affirming procedures for ICE detainees.

Defense

We passed the Defense Appropriations Act, allocating $833.053 billion to counter China, foster innovation, support servicemembers and their families, and enhance the DOD’s role in combating the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs.

The bill strategically refocuses the Pentagon on its core mission, our warfighters. It eliminates funding for social agendas and initiatives that are not consistent with the Department’s primary purpose.

State & Foreign Operations

The State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act provides a total discretionary allocation of $51.713 billion, which is 11% below the Fiscal Year 2024 enacted level and 19% below the President’s Budget Request.

The bill prioritizes agencies and programs that protect our national security, safeguard our global economic interests, support our allies and partners, and promote democracy and freedom abroad all while cutting funds to wasteful climate initiatives and bureaucratic organizations.

As we have witnessed over the last several years, China’s growing influence in the world economically, technologically, and militarily is alarming. As relations between China and the United States become increasingly strained, Congress must act!

That’s why I co-sponsored H.R. 3974, the Securing Our Airspace from Reconnaissance Act of 2023, which bans unmanned aircraft from China from entering U.S. airspace.
